Health Insurance: No More Mysteries
It can be easy to make the wrong decision and end up with a health insurance policy that is either too much or too little coverage for your needs. For example, think about the deductible limit that you want to set: if you are a young, healthy person, with no pre-existing medical conditions — you may not visit the doctor very often. This means that it might make sense to set a higher deductible as a way to save money on your insurance policy premiums.

In addition to the different choices made about coverage limits, amounts and deductibles, there are also different health insurance plans to consider, such as Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO), and Indemnity Health Plans.

HMO or Health Maintenance Organization
If you belong to an HMO, you will typically pay a small co-payment for each doctor’s visit, in addition to the premium amount. For the doctors who are members of the HMO, offer services such as office visits for a set capitation based on the number of patients enrolled as his patients. The doctors who belong to the HMO receive the capitation whether a subscriber receives services or not.

The benefit of the HMO model is that employers can more easily afford to offer medical coverage for their employees.  A potential downside risk is that it is possible that not all services may be covered under HMO plans — meaning you may have to pay out-of-pocket for some services that are not covered by the HMO.

Preferred Provider Organizations or PPO
If you are a member of a PPO, you can get get health care from a participating medical group at a discount. The advantage of being part of a PPO is that the price of medical services are offered at a reduced cost to the patient.  One disadvantage of a PPO is that some procedures and treatment options need to be assessed by a utilization review board before they are approved.  This can lead to doctors being forced to alter their treatment plan in order to assure that it will be covered.

Indemnity Health Plans
Indemnity health plans use to be the main plan available. Before skyrocketing costs and the rise of HMO’s and PPO’s, these were the plan of choice and popularity. Doctors who participate in this type of health plan agree to charge discounted prices to insurers for services they render to patients. In turn, patients after reaching their deductible limit, are responsible for paying, in general about 20% of the price of the service. Although this type of coverage is more expensive than the PPO or the HMO models, indemnity health plans give people the most choice – patients can choose the doctor and the hospital they want, as long as they are in members of the plan.

Preventive Care
Due to the high cost of traditional health care, many insurers are now approving treatments outside the scope of traditional medicine. These treatments can sometimes be less expensive and yet, just as effective. Acupuncture, chiropractic, and holistic programs are now being used as effective alternatives to more expensive therapies Within this same area, the concept of preventive medicine has developed into an important feature in health care.

Another example of preventative care is that many insurers are educating people about the use of Zinc as a way to avoid a trip to the Urgent Care for treatment for a cold. As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
