You have a motorcycle and you know what it feels like to enjoy the open road. The wind, the open air, the freedom. Don’t forget though… you still have a responsibility to yourself to make sure that you have the proper motorcycle insurance coverage.
Motorcycle Insurance: Full Coverage… Are You Sure?
Make sure you know what is in your policy for motorcycle insurance. Just because you think that you may have full coverage doesn’t mean that you actually are going to be covered for everything that is a risk. For example, having full coverage motorcycle insurance does NOT cover any medical costs for you.
Be sure to check your policy because it is possible that your passenger may be covered for medical, but you are not unless you have purchased optional medical coverage.
Motorcycle Insurance: Collision and Comprehensive Coverage
Collision and Comprehensive coverage on your Motorcycle insurance will only pay for damages (minus your deductible) for up to the book value of your motorcycle. If you have spend a lot of money on add ons such as chrome or a custom paint job, you will want to make sure that you have coverage for the cash valueof the bike, not the book value.
In order to get your bike covered for cash value, you will need to get an appraisal and probably several pictures of your bike and work with your local motorcycle insurance agent.
Motorcycle Insurance: Some Companies Specialize in Motorcycle Insurance
It is possible when you are shopping around for motorcycle insurance, that you can find a company who specializes in motorcycle insurance. Hint: they will not be the larger companies that you see advertising on the Super Bowl, but they will be well known among riders. These companies will insure all kinds of bikes, including antique bikes, custom bikes and even insure multiple motorcycles that you own.
It is also possible (probable?) that you will save money by getting a motorcycle insurance quote from a company who specializes in motorcycle insurance.
Once you have double checked your motorcycle insurance, you can then get back to what you originally bought your bike for — hitting the open road! Ride safe and be sure to double-check your motorcycle insurance coverage.
